Racism on The World War II Homefront Discussion
Mod 8 Assignment: Racism on the WWII Homefront1919 unread replies.1919 replies. In the style of our textbook author, Eric Foner, we started this module with a look at some of the abstract ideas driving American entry into World War II (like the "Four Freedoms" that Roosevelt said were threatened by the Axis, especially Germany and Japan). In this assignment, we'll pivot to the experience of the WWII home front to judge whether ideas like the Four Freedoms applied evenly to the American people. As Foner has hinted in previous chapters, things are never quite what they seem, particularly for immigrants, African-Americans, people of color, etc.In recognition that many of you are still writing the Midterm Essay this week, notice that you are again only responsible for two response posts to other students. I've also centered this assignment on watching videos. All the videos below are available on YouTube and have closed captions. They are all roughly two to five minutes long.Assignment InstructionsStep 1: Watch the videos below. Step 2: Reply to PromptUsing this week's videos and images, respond to the prompt below in a 150- to 250-word discussion post. No formal citations necessary, but do reference the sources to support your ideas. You don't have to answer all the questions, just the ones that get you writing.Prompt: Did everyone in the US have access to Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms"? What do the above sources say about ideas about race, ethnicity, and belonging in the US during the war? How can we reconcile the American ideas language of equality used to fight Nazi racism with the home front experiences and societal treatment of people of color, particularly black Americans, the Indigenous, Asians and Asian-Americans, and Mexican and Mexican-Americans? (We won't really talk about people descended from or immigrating from Central and South American until after the 1950s-- the US and Europe still have a lot of Cold War destabilizing to do in the region before we see increased US immigration from beyond Mexico). Step 3: Reply to Two (2) PeersIn a short paragraph between 50 and 100 words, add further supporting details or respectfully disagree with the post's author using evidence from this week's readings.Respond to as many peers as you like, but you must respond to at least two coursemates. Please reply to peers who do not yet have replies so that all are included in the conversation. How to participate: A few tips for this assignment:Press "Reply" to add your own, individual reply to the discussion board. To reply to your peers' posts, press reply under their specific post.Coursemates' posts will become visible once you have posted to the discussion board. For discussion assignments, it is recommended that you compose your posts in a word processor so that you can copy and paste into your discussion posts. BE AWARE: There is no Save function for discussion posts.

Santa Monica College Create your own Romantic Landscape Discussion
Q.1 Discussion Thread: Create your own Romantic LandscapeDirections:First, watch and read the videos that describe the work of German Romantic landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich:Friedrich, The Abbey in the Oak Forest (Links to an external site.)Friedrich, The Lone TreeRomanticism was a diverse style of painting that often focused on nature as means to emphasize spirituality. Contrary to Enlightenment painters, Romantic artists were attracted to the magical connotations of landscape as a limitless repository of the universal cosmos. Many of these paintings emphasized the smallness of man in comparison with the omnipotence of G-d or the cosmos. Romanitc paintings were also used to encourage colonization by presenting the rich and wild resources of nature.I was surprised by how many landscape shots were on my phone and social media accounts. If you do not have any landscapes photos already, please take one of your neighborhood, and use that.Your assignment is to choose a landscape picture that you have taken or to take a new one, and to write a 150-300 word essay describing why it is meaningful to you, and whether it possesses any qualities of Romantic Art. Make sure to make a comment on another students photograph!Q.2Comparison Esssay, The Odalisque: Ingres vs. Boucher Directions:First, read and watch the texts and videos that cover the sytle of painting called Romanticism, and more specifically Orientalism:RomanticismOrientalism"Painting and Colonial Culture" Ingre's The Grande OdalisqueIngres The Grand OdalisqueThen use the comparison images to write a 200-400 word essay comparing and contrasting Ingres's Grande Odalisque the Romantic/Orientalist period with Boucher's The Toilet of Venus from the Rococo period. Consider these questions:How is the setting and atmosphere of the scen different? How are the bodies of the subjects portrayed differently? How does each painting communicate sensuality?Which painting do you like better, and why? Or do neither suite your taste?Q.3 Comparison Essay, Military Occupation: Goya vs. Velasquez Directions:First, watch and read the video and text that covers Goya's painting, The Third of May, 1808:Goya's Third of May 1808Goya, The Third of May 1808Then use the Velasquez vs. Goya comparison images to compare and contrast Goya's Third of May, 1808 with Velasquez's The Surrender of Breda in a 200-500 word essay, considering the following questions:How is the occupation of a terriotry by a foreign power presented differently in both works? How is the point of view of the artist different?Who is emphasized as the hero in both works? How are the style of the paintings different?Q.4Critical Thesis Essay #3: Nochlin, "The Imaginary Orient" Directions:Read Professor Nochlin’s article "The Imaginary Orient". It is helpful to take notes while reading in order to organize your thoughts, and then write the essay afterreading the complete article. Answer the prompt in the format of a 500-1000 word,double-spaced, typed essay. Remember to edit and check your work so that it reads asnicely as possible. Be sure to read all the texts and watch all the videos in this weekscourse module, they are related to the content of this paper.PROMPT: What are some stereotypes of the Middle East that Nochlin indicates bothfascinated and repelled Europeans in their construction of an “Imaginary Orient.”How did nineteenth century painters represent and depict the “Orient” for Europeanviewers? In what ways do race, gender, and sexuality influence the conception of the“Imaginary Orient” in the European psyche.
