The region chosen to complete the assignment is Homestead, a city found within
Miami-Dade County, Florida. Investigations regarding the city prior to the windshield
survey revealed that Homestead is the second oldest city in the county and it sits on an
area of 14.4 square miles, with 0.1 square miles occupied by water. Geographically, the
city is located about 25 miles northwest of Key Largo and 35 miles southwest of Miami
and lies between “Everglades national park” to the west and “Biscayne national park” to
the east. Population per square mile is about 3,996.8 and the land area in square miles
is 15.14. There were about 23,419 households and the city comprise of approximately
69,907 persons. During the survey, no housing construction activities were evident and
the dwellers look developed.
Majority of the housing structures were multi-family housing formations and a
number of vacant houses could be noted with the for rent signs. One could tell most of
the housing belonged to persons of lower economic power while some of the housing
establishments belonged to middle class citizens to upper class citizens. Duplexes
formed most of the multi-family structures with very few of them abandoned. Majority of
the homes had cars parked outside and the car makes varied in age from present
generations models to old school cars of the late 70s. Most of the city is zoned to
“Homestead High School” while the northwes...
