Abstract
Redshirting is a common practice in modern schools, and occurs both for academic and
sporting activities. The review herein explores some of the existing research on the subject with
the intention of exemplifying some of the underlying theories related to the practice. According
to the different research studies herein analyzed, financial reasons tend to be the primary cause
for engagement in redshirting. Additionally, parents are often aware of the practice and will often
encourage it, largely due to the consequences it has on the children’s welfare. Further, the
research provides recommendations primarily on the development of policies intent on
addressing the issue in school. However, the research also confirms that further research is
necessary to guarantee extensive success in implementing any intervention measures.

Redshirting
The curriculum currently used in the delivery of learning objectives in modern schools is
a result of extensive research and expert opinions on the best ways to ensure that children acquire
enough knowledge to facilitate their ability to contribute to the society. Among the different
factors considered in the development of the said curriculum programs has always been the
ability to understand the provided information based on the human development process.
According to cognitive theories of human development, children are always developing in their
cognitive anatomy, and some of the concepts that they may not understand at infancy could be
well understood two years later (Casey, Tottenham, Liston, & Durston, 2005). In essence, in
addition to the attention paid to the chronology of material taught to scholars in modern schools,
there is always the consideration of age in the education process, inferring that students ought to
be at a certain grade when they reach a particular grade.
According to Jones (2011), redshirting disregards the importance accorded to time, by
having scholars spend too much time in a particular grade, with the intention of having them
develop much more than they ought to be at the said, and consequent grades. For instance, For
instance, students in ninth grade, or freshmen, ought to be about fifteen years old, and would be
fair to participate in education and extracurricular activities with students in the same grade,
since they possess roughly the same capabilities. However, a parent could have the child repeat
the seventh and eighth grade to the extent that he or she could join the ninth grade while at 17
years old. Ultimately, the child would have an unfair physical and mental advantage over his or
her peers to the extent that competing with them in activities that require such qualities would be
unfair to the rest of the class.

Essentially, redshirting is an unfair practice in schools, where parents, teachers, and
students, engage in malpractices intended to give the students some advantages over the peers in
the said education process. In most cases, the different stakeholders participate in redshirting
with the primary intention of enabling the students involved get scholarships or pursue athletics
careers right from schools (Souders, 2011). Consequently, clear characteristics of redshirting
include the facts that it is done deliberately includes deliberate efforts to earn the students an
unfair advantage, and that the society is extensively aware of the practice. In light of such
knowledge, there have been extensive efforts by scholars in the sports and education sector to try
and understand the issue, in addition to exemplifying some of the consequences of redshirting
that the participants may be quick to dismiss due to their negative implications.
Literature Review
One of the most common narratives on redshirting revolves around the necessity of sports
activities in the contemporary academic sector. According to Dixon, Liburdi, Horton, and Weir
(2013), students that had been significantly academically delayed in their progress to consecutive
grades in schools were often likely to be among the best performers in different sporting and
athletics activities in schools. Focusing their research on different athletics participants in the
United States Collegiate sports activities, Dixon et al. (2013) ascertained the existence of an
unfair advantage of the elder students in the sports compared to those that were of the
appropriate age. As indicated in the earlier example herein, a seventeen-year-old freshman can
never compete fairly with a student in the same grade, who is two years his junior. The former is
