Use the Internet or Strayer databases to research a civil or criminal court case in which you are interested.

Write a five to eight (5-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize the seminal facts of the case that you chose.
  2. Explain the main laws that have been violated in the case that you chose.
  3. Describe the possible penalties that could be associated with the laws that you just described.
  4. Explain whether your specific case was heard in the state or federal court system, and include any related jurisdictional requirements. Explain the fundamental reasons why it was necessary for the case to be heard in that particular court system.
  5. Summarize the outcome of the case, and indicate whether the judge or jury made the decision.
  6. Discuss whether or not you believe that the outcome of the case was justified. Provide a rationale for the response.

U.S. v. Cassius Clay: Muhammad Ali's Fight against the Vietnam Draft

The Seminal Facts of the Case

In 1964, after Muhammad Ali won the world heavyweight champ, he converted to Islam
and attracted the attention of the FBI, particularly his draft status, which resulted in a fight which
took five years to come to an end. Ali was accused of ignoring the draft and in 1960, registering
for selective service. While Ali was previously classified A1 in 1962, he was subsequently
changed to 1Y as being unacceptable to be inducted into the armed forces, he was reclassified in
1966 as 1A and hence eligible to be drafted once again (Quintana, 2007). Ali was condemned for
his position on the Vietnam War. He applied for exemption from the draft based on a
conscientious objector, saying that being a minister of the Nation of Islam, he could not bear
arms and kill others. Ali was cited objecting to combat military service where he was required to
participate in the taking of human lives (Quintana, 2007). The Hearing Officer found that Ali’s
beliefs were sincere. However, the Department of Justice recommended that Ali be denied the
registration for conscientious objector. Ali was ordered to induction but he declined to submit on
the basis of his religious beliefs as a minister in Islam. Ali was indicted for violating the 50
