Description

The term homeostasis derived from American physiologist Walter Cannon, to refer to our bodies ability to remain stable internally despite the ever-changing outside world. Our body is in a state of homeostasis when everything is functioning just as it should be. We may not think about it on a daily basis but our organ systems are working hard to keep up this state of homeostasis. Our systems have an internal checklist to make sure everything is running smoothly such as blood levels of vital nutrients, heart activity, body temperature and blood pressure. It is also important that our bodies do not store too much waste or for too long. The systems coordinate all these items on the checklist are the nervous and endocrine system. It is vital that these systems communicate with one another, when there is an issue in the body where a certain area is not working at its normal function these systems work together to get the levels up to a safe level. When these organ systems fail to work together homeostasis imbalance can occur.
