Incarceration refers to a state of being confined in prison. Criminologists believed that
custodial punishment is more painful that noncustodial punishment. As a result, they believed that
it helps to change the behavioral patterns of an individual by showing that crime does not benefit
them since every time they engage in criminal activities, they risk being imprisoned. The criminal
justice department adopted the system, and it has been enforcing it for a very long time now. The
duration of incarceration varies with the seriousness of the crime so that the most serious crimes
such as murder bear sentences of incarceration for a lifetime.
