THE DEATH PENALTY
The Death Penalty
Jang Song-thaek, the uncle of a supreme leader Kim Jong-un in North Korea has been
executed according to an announcement by the state media. Jang Song-thaek is said to have
committed political treason. He is the one hundred and fifth victim to have been executed in
North Korea. This figure maps the number of people that have been executed between two
thousand and seven and two thousand and twelve in North Korea. This is only a week after two
men were hanged in Japan. Despite many countries coming out to abolish the death penalty, it is
still a common practice among different countries. The United States, North Korea, China, and
Yemen are some of the countries that are known to carry most executions in the world today.
This makes us ask the question of whether these death penalties are lawful. Is the death penalty
lawful or even moral? (Bedau, et al. 1998).
This form of punishment has led to a division in religious communities all over the world.
This is especially made possible by the fact that some religious communities such as the
Buddhists are starting to practice execution. These religious communities argue that the Old

the fact that the Old Testament states clearly that an eye for an eye in cases of a person having
committed murder. It is important to note that most countries practice the death penalty to people

terrorism (Sellin, et al. 1980).The New Testament, on the other hand, exhorts us to turn the other
cheek when a wrong is done to us. This is basically discouraging us against revenge of any form.
The Quran, on the other hand, suggests that at some point Muslims should retaliate with
forgiveness rather than seeking vengeance. With all these theories, the religious community is
bound to be divided. This is because each form of belief suggests a different thing from the other

and these countries having diversified hold each of the religious communities. The question is if
we cannot base the justification of our actions on any religious belief, are our actions truly
justified?
There are many arguments supporting the execution of people. One of the arguments is
that it is a form of retribution to other criminals. ‘Bad guys deserve to suffer'. This is the ongoing
argument about the death penalty. They argue that punishment is what really levels the playing
field. The argument is that the lives of the people these wrongdoers have destroyed went on
poorly so why should their lives be any better. Retributivists argue that the punishment of
wrongdoers is right. It is valuable simply because it teaches a lesson to other wrongdoers and
also serves as justice to them.
This is however not true be...
