There is no way the offender can ever repair the harm that they have caused even if the homicide was not purposeful. Homicide does not just include the first degree murder of a victim and in fact involve various levels of the crime. These levels include first degree, second degree, manslaughter and negligent homicide. In most case the criminal offender that is found guilty of one of the levels of homicide will end up with a long prison sentence or a life sentence. In capital cases or murder with special circumstances the murderer can be put to death for their crime. The ultimate difference between the homicides involves the intent of the criminal offender. First degree murder involves the criminal offender making plans to commit the murder and then following through with those plans. For example if a husband makes a plan with his new girlfriend to kill his wife but he cannot afford the divorce and doesn't want to lose custody of the children and then follows through with the plan he has made then the husband has committed first degree murder. In most state the person that commits the first degree murder will receive a life sentence with or without patrol.
