With all the changes in the federal and state laws schools have had to focus more on helping all children by addressing problems earlier in the general education settings. The "Response to Intervention" (RTI) is a process that refers to how well students respond to research-based instruction. The purpose of the program is to provide a safety net for at-risk readers, some of whom have learning disabilities. At one time, students could not get help until they were failing. The idea of RTI is to catch students when they begin to struggle and helps them to not fall through the cracks. Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-step approach to providing interventions to students within general and special education. What are the benefits of this approach? All students are expected to be screened for any concerns. Every student has to take some form of testing to see who has any concerns and need support. Students will be continuously monitored through objective tests. This monitoring is used to determine changes in how the child is taught. RTI is not an intervention to discipline as many think. It is a positive way of identifying learning disabilities early.
