Issues and Threats of Prison GangsNameClassDateProfessorIssues and Threats of Prison Gangs The correctional system is responsible for supervising criminal offenders that have been sentenced to probation, parole, or prison. Once an inmate has been sentenced to prison the responsibility of the correctional system is to ensure the inmate is properly supervised and confined as well as ensuring the inmate's safety needs are met and the prison staff is properly prepared to deal with the unruly inmate. While the prison environment gives rise to many challenges one of the greatest challenges facing a prison is the security threat created by the different gangs contained within the prison. While gang members are put into prison because they committed a severe enough crime to deserve this type of punishment but in fact gangs thrive in the prison environment, especially in maximum security prisons. In the gang environment gang members form similar groups in prison in order to insert their power and provide protection for gang members. The gangs continue to engage in illegal behavior, such as drug sales, coercion, and assault, and will recruit new members in the prison environment. In order to stay safe prison inmates join gangs to ensure their safety. Gangs exploit the weaknesses in the correctional system and any loopholes in the law to run successful criminal organization while confined in the prison and instead of paying for their crimes
