Within literature, cinema, and television, all too often the view of a homosexual man or woman is altogether viewed with scorn and disgust. One realm, relatively new, is uncharted territory as far as this is concerned - that of the video game. Surprisingly, however, video games, arguably more often than other media, view homosexuality in a more favorable light - if it is mentioned at all. While gender discrepancies tend to fluctuate, representations of non-hetero sexual identities are, for the most part, receiving a more favorable light. The most esteemed examples of this are the recent game Fallout: New Vegas, with its portrayal of realistic homosexual characters, as well as that of The Sims series, which all along has opened options for a player to be whatever they chose in that regard.In order to understand the representations of the GLBT community in games, one needs to understand the thoughts of the people who create these games. One thing about video games that makes them completely alien compared to other media, however, is this - interactivity. With literature, television, and movies, rarely do you have the chance to cause anything to happen within the course of the media.
