In drama, characters come alive through spoken dialogue and through their actions. Carefully written dialogue, with distinct words and actions, is essential in revealing the characters private thoughts to the audience. Through the major and minor characters, the playwright is able to develop the theme, or major idea(s) of the play. As you read Grandpa and the Statue, pay close attention to what the characters say and do as the play develops. You will see certain characters grow and change, while other characters remain the same. The meaning or the theme of the play and its importance will be revealed through the changes in the characters. THE SELECTION(attached as a handout)I.)
