There are several reasons why this is required. Among the reasons:it provides evidence that a thorough examination of the field in which one is writing has been undertaken,it provides support for the arguments one makes,it shows the quality of ones support,it allows one to share ones sources of information,it enables other writers to easily identify, locate and retrieve the sources of information in ones writing, andto prevent plagiarism.The act of identifying ones sources of information in academic writing is usually referred to as referencing.
