Because police officers fulfill a dangerous role in society it is essential that they are provided with a certain amount of authority in order to make decisions in the field. Police officers have the authority, or discretion, to identify criminal suspects in the field, the type of legal sanctions that will be received, the level of force that will be applied in order to detain a criminal suspects, and in how an officer will distribute their time concerning service duties. The term Police discretion refers to the informed decision which police officers independently make in terms of judging whether or not a given instance translated to the violation of law (Khlam, 2010). Police officers are faced with all types of dangers when going about their daily business and because all of the potential dangers they face police officers can only be trained to anticipate potential threats and to apply good judgment in their response to situations they respond to in the field.
