The method is based on the large difference between boiling points of the components. The component of lower boiling point has a lower vapor pressure, thus leaving the surface first as the temperature rises. Set up the experiment by putting 25mL of 1-chlorobutane and toluene mixture into a 50mL round bottomed flask. Insert the thermometer and start boiling the flask. Collect the distillate in six small test tubes that divide the liquids into 7mL fractions (labeled A-F). The last fraction is collected from the flask.
