We ran the solubility test in water and NaOH for samples A through D. If they were soluble in water, we tested their solubility in NaOH and then used the blue litmus paper to observe and infer the structure. For the samples that were not soluble in water, we used the ceric ammonium nitrate (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6 to test the presence of alcohol by observing the color change from orange to red. We added 2.0 ml of water and dioxane along with 1.0 ml of ceric ammonium and then added 8 drops of the solution. We prepared a control solution by replacing 8 drops of sample with 8 drops of water so as to compare the results. Then for samples E, F and G we carried out the Lucas test during which we added 1.5 ml of Lucas reagent in a small test tube with 5 drops of sample and gently swirled it. We then noted the time it took to turn the sample to cloudy white appearance. Depending upon the time taken, we inferred the structure of the alcohols. Then for sample I and J, we performed the Silver Nitrate test to determine the identity of each of the halide compound. We added 1.5 ml of the 2% alcoholic solution of silver nitrate with 5 drops of sample solution in a small t
