VOLCANOESThe science of volcanoes is volcanology. Volcanoes are 'burning mountain' as per the former notion. Now a volcano is defined as a place or opening from which molten rock or gas (generally both) issues from the earth's interior on to the surface. It also refers to the familiar cone crater structure. The opening from which volcanic material issues out is the vent. The channel way that brings the material up from depth is the conduit. More or less cylindrical conduits are called volcanic pipes. Volcanic necks or volcanic pipes which are filled with solidified material and later exposed at the surface by erosion. Products of volcanoes:The products are of 3 different states:1. Gaseous 2. Liquid and 3. Solid Volcanic gases: steam is by for the commonest of the volcanic gases. Besides steam (60 to 90%) the gases are found to consist in order of abundance, CO2, N, SO2 and smaller proportions of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, sulphur and chlorine. Other related compounds associated are sulphurated hydrogen, hydrochloric acid, and other acids and volatile chlorides of iron, potassium and other metals. Steam may be partly or wholly derived from superficial source, such as crater lakes, ground waters and the sea, steam blasts due to the beating of such extraneous water are often described as phreatic explosions. Lava flows: when the molten rock material magma comes to the surface it is called lava. On the basis of silicate content the magma or lava may be cl
