Chapter 1: The Nature of SoundWaves carry energy, not matter, from one place to another. Sound waves (acousticwaves) carry energy as packets of particle compressions followed by areas of relaxation(rarefaction). Much like a spring that is compressed, energy is stored in the areas ofcompression in a sound wave. The propagation of sound is, therefore, considered a typeof mechanical energy. (Electromagnetic waves on the other hand, such as light and Xrays, carry energy in the form of small packets called photons.) Sound waves can bedefined as the cyclical compression and relaxation of particles in the medium throughwhich they travel. If the physical characteristics of the medium remain the same, thesewaves will continue to travel in a straight line. Sound waves are mechanical, longitudinalwaves. They require a medium (matter) within which to propagate and, unlike electromagnetic waves; acoustic waves cannot travel in a vacuum. There are two types of sound waves:LONGITUDINAL: particle motion is along the samedirection as the propagation of the incidentenergy. (SOUND WAVES)TRANSVERSE: particles move is in a direction atright angles to the direction of the incident energy.(POND WAVES)Sound waves are transmitted through particlemotion. As mechanical force is transmitted into themedium by the sound source, each particle is pushedaway from its resting, or equilibrium, position. As thesound wave passes, the particle returns to itsequilibrium position. The distan
