Brecht unloadedOur group, consisting of 6 individuals who decided to work together on this project, was assigned the task of devising a play. Devising theatre is creating and staging a play that is not text based. The script is created by the devising members of the group along the rehearsals. Oddey (1994, p. 1) has written in detail about this process, and defined it as follows: '[t]he process reflects a multivision made up of each member's individual perception of that world as received in a series of images, then interpreted and defined as a product'. This process requires a lot of creativity and teamwork as devising is quite free and open: anything can happen and it can go in any direction. The only stable factor for us was a playwright that we had to start from: Brecht. Along our devising process we considered implementing techniques of Brechtian theatre in our piece. In the following essay I will describe these elements and our results in applying them.Bertold Brecht was one of the most well-known playwrights who invented 'epic theatre' (Lumley, p. 78). How epic theatre differed from the traditional 'dramatic theatre' can be defined by the notes Brecht wrote on one of his plays, Fall of the City of Mahagony.
