Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition attributed with millions of deaths annually in the country, approximately 18 million in 2002 as per the American Diabetes Association. While primarily a genetic condition, diabetes can be avoided or managed with lifestyle and environmental changes. The Tennessee state health plan was drawn up in 2009 and later updated in 2012. It seeks to provide policy guidelines to govern the health care practices in the state and improve the health and general well-being of its citizens. With regards to type 2 diabetes mellitus, the plan has performed poorly despite the launch of Project Diabetes, a state and TDH sponsored initiative to combat the disease. To put it into perspective, the state was ranked 44th worst when the number of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus was tallied in 2012.
