CAMPYLOBACTERGROUP. TWOINTRODUCTION. Campylobacter - Greek for "curved rod"Campylobacters are motile, non-spore-forming,curved, gram-negative rods. Bacteria of the genus Campylobacter and of therelated genera Arcobacter and Helicobacter causea variety of inflammatory conditions. Althoughacute diarrheal illnesses are most common, theseorganisms may cause infections in virtually allparts of the body, especially in compromisedhosts.ETIOLOGY More than 15 species have since been identified. Thesespecies are currently divided into three genera:Campylobacter, Arcobacter, and Helicobacter. Not allof the species are pathogens of humans. The humanpathogens fall into two major groups: those thatprimarily cause diarrheal disease and those that causeextraintestinal infection. The principal diarrhealpathogen is C. jejuni, which accounts for 8090% of allcases of recognized illness due to campylobacters andrelated genera. Other organisms that cause diarrhealdisease include C. coli, C. upsaliensis, C. lari, C.hyointestinalis, C. fetusEPIDEMIOLOGY Campylobacters are found in the gastrointestinal tractof many animals used for food including poultry,cattle, sheep, and swine and many household petsincluding birds, dogs, and cats. These microorganismsusually do not cause illness in their animal hosts. Inmost cases, campylobacters are transmitted tohumans in raw or undercooked food products orthrough direct contact with infected animals. In
