The legal system was created in order to ensure that citizens in society that commit crimes are punished for those crimes and the victim gets justice. While laws are created based on the moral and ethical beliefs of the majority of the members of society and the goal of the legal system is to fairly distribute the law and treat all criminal offenders equally the system promotes good and bad ethics. Ethics involves the actors that make decisions within the criminal justice system. The criminal justice professional has an obligation to act lawfully and ethically but the criminal justice system sole focus is justice. The criminal justice professional is given discretion to act and there is an expectation that they will use this authority to act ethically. What is considered ethical or moral is established by the society and the laws and policies that are created. Unethical behavior is discouraged but is something that occurs within the separate functions of the criminal justice system. The criminal justice system promotes professional ethics where each individual uphold their obligation to society and their duty as a public servant. For example the police have an ethical obligation to follow the law but also to apply good decision making in the field. Unethical behavior in law enforcement would be accepting
