Before the Constitution was established, however, was the Articles of Confederation which was the countries first attempt in establishing a strong central government. The Articles of Confederation were established to protect the powers of the state and limit the powers of a national government but the focus was not on establishing a central government. The U.S. Constitution was established to create a strong central government that protected the rights of the citizen while acting in the best interest of the country as a whole. One of the similarities in the Articles and the constitution involves the freedoms afforded to the state. The Articles of Confederation were established in 1781 after American won their freedom from England in the American Revolution. The articles were developed to govern national affairs without limiting the authority of the state (Bretz, 2008). These were the first step towards establishing a great nation. The Articles of Confederation was used to outline the affairs of the nation but while protecting the interests of the state above any powers granted the nation's government.
