While most fires are accidental many fires are set on purpose and require the skills and expertise of an arson investigator. An arson investigator is responsible for the criminal investigation of the fire scene and determining important facts such as origin and motive. The arson investigator will gather evidence that will point to the type of accelerant that was used at the crime scene as well as question the owner and any potential witnesses to the fire scene. In order to perform their job effectively, the arson investigator needs to first be properly trained and will need to be supplied with the required equipment. In arson cases the investigator will need to be able to perform many of the same duties as performed by law enforcement in other types of criminal investigations. They will need to have the necessary tools to ensure they can be effective in their role. When an arson investigator heads to an arson scene they will have specific equipment that will be needed to conduct the investigation. The arson investigator will need a notebook in order to take notes about a potential origin or identified evidence as well as to sketch the crime scene (FEMA, 1992).
