In this scenario a crime scene investigator arrives to a homicide crime scene in which a body was located in an abandoned warehouse. This warehouse has not been in use for a long time, and there are signs of recent temporary living arrangements. This could make the investigation more difficult for the crime scene investigator. The crime scene investigator is responsible for training new police officers on the proper measures for preserving a crime scene. All police departments and sheriff's offices should include intensive training for its personnel on how to properly protect crime scenes but potentially, any police officer can be put into the position of first responding officer to a crime scene (Schiro, 2006). Once police arrive on the scene of a crime the first steps is to preserve the crime scene. This is done by placing crime scene tape around the crime scene not just the body. For example if a crime happens in an apartment the entire apartment would need to be taped off to preserve the scene. If the evidence is not preserved by responding police the evidence could be lost or damaged making it more difficult for police to investigate the crime and identify the criminal offender.
