Instead of sentencing the first time and nonviolent offender to prison alternative sentencing programs have been developed not only to reduce the overcrowding problem but provide an alternative to putting these types of offenders in jail. Probation is a prison alternative that involves criminal offenders being released into society but under the supervision of a probation officer. Because there are many different types of offender there are different types of probation programs to meet their needs. Some alternative or intermediate punishment programs are designed to meet the needs of juvenile delinquents while others are focused on meeting the needs of the addicted. Some of these programs are designed for sex offenders while others focus on meeting the needs of the mentally ill, gang members, or those with HIV/Aids. One special probation program is the Intensive Supervision Juvenile Probation Program. This program is designed to provide an alternative to detainment for juvenile offenders associated with gang behavior. The Intensive Supervision Juvenile Probation Program is designed to aid the youth that has experienced brushes with the law due to their gang affiliation.
