Jones founded the People Temple in 1955 and moved his congregation from Indianapolis to California. After the move the congregation of the Peoples Temple started to gain a large membership and Jones began to inflict his left wing ideals onto his members. When Jones came under scrutiny by the IRS he moved his congregation to an isolated community in Guyana. Jones and his followers relocated to South America in 1977 to the newly named town, Jonestown and a year later over 900 members and Jones were dead form a mass suicide. Jonestown Massacre Jonestown was located on a tract of land purchased by the People's Temple had purchased and developed by members that left for Guyana earlier. As the group established their new home the behavior Jones became more and more erratic and began to have greater psychological control over his members. The members of Jones congregation were told they would be moving to utopia where they could create their own more natural world. When the members arrived in 1977 they did not arrive to the utopia promised but instead to a site under construction and just a few cabins were built.
