You are the supervisor for the Beatts City Arson Squad. It is 3:00 a.m., and the temperature is below freezing. Your unit is called to a suspicious fire scene. Your team consists of you and 3 others. Upon arrival, you discover that the fire is at the Novandon Discount Department Store. There are 6,000 of these stores in the United States, and they are very successful. This store is two stories high and has a customer elevator in the front of the store and a freight elevator in the rear. The battalion fire chief reported to you that the crowd of onlookers braving the cold to watch the fire contains about 100 people. In addition, the battalion chief provides you with 3 plastic gas containers (3 gallons each), the type used for putting gas in lawn mowers. In the arson investigation of the fire at the Novandon Discount Department Store there are clear signs arson has occurred. The arson report will provide information on processing evidence at a fire scene including the collection and documentation of the evidence, elements of arson evidence, the search for accelerant evidence and types of equipment used to collect evidence at the fire scene. Lastly the arson investigator will develop a theory on the circumstances surrounding the arson investigation to wrap up the report. At the arson scene just like in any other crime scene the first step after the fire is put out is to secure the area to ensure that evidence that remains will not become lost destroyed or damaged. Police place police tape around the fire scene plus provide continuous monitoring to prevent unauthorized entry into the crime scene (NIJ 2009). The police officers securing the crime scene will push back onlookers to ensure they are not harmed by the fire or the fire departments efforts to put out the fire. Before the arson investigator enters the fire scene it is important for them to take not of the onlookers in the crowd. If the arson investigator cannot develop any motives for the fire it could have been set on purpose by a fire
