The word corruption, no matter the society, is seen as a depraved act that poisons a society. The act being defined as corrupt, however, can be different. In other words in America if a public official accepts a gift it is considered an act of corruption while in China this act is considered perfectly acceptable. Countries with a social structure and political traditions based on the exchange of gifts are considered corruptive in Westernized countries while in the traditional society it is a natural part of the civil responsibilities and etiquette of the country. Corruption is a westernized concept but it can apply to other countries and societies and can cross cultures. Even though what is considered moral or right in society may not be considered moral and right in another if a country is corrupt then there are people coming out on top while others suffer. Gift giving in other cultures of traditions are not acts of corruption if they are a part of the social norms of the society but if a person in a position of power is engaging in acts that are abusive or illegal it will have an negative effect on the entire society.
