The 2nd amendment guarantees the citizens right to bear arms but the result of this freedom is guns falling into the wrong hands. Modern firearms are made up of all types of makes and models of firearms that can be used to commit a murder. In order to locate the criminal offender the police must be able to identify the make and model of the firearm used in order to tie it to a criminal suspect. In their basic form all firearms will consist of a trigger, action, barrel, and a stock or a grip. The majority of firearms operate in the exact same why even if they may appear different. The study of these principles is called ballistics and consists of three parts: internal, external, and terminal (Juve, 2010). The barrel is where the bullet is fired from and is very important to the ballistic study of a gun fired at the crime scene. Making the barrel of a gun is a sensitive process that begins with good strong, quality steel. If the steel is of the highest quality there will be no impurities which are essential to stopping the barrel from eroding. The most common types of steel used are 4140 chrome and the 416 stainless moly steel.
