Across the nation an average of a 1,000 deaths per year occur with 980 in 2008 and in 2009 the number was 948 (Noonan, 2011). After 2008 the number of deaths of inmates in custody began a slow decline and in there was 2010 only 918 deaths in custody across the nation (Noonan, 2011). Of the death occurring while in custody a larger percent are males and the main reason was due to suicide followed by heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men out in society. The third leading cause of death behind bars is due to drug abuse. There are many different causes for death in the prison environment just as out in the world but due to the violent nature of the prison environment homicides are not uncommon. The fourth leading cause of death behind bars is homicide. Of homicide victims behind bars 98% involve males.
