Something in the environment of the person causes their death. Environmental deaths can be the result of something in nature, such as being struck by lightning or killed in a tornado or they can be the result of something in the person's environment, such as dying in a house fire or dying of pneumonia due to extreme cold. Environmental deaths come in many different forms. Environmental deaths are most commonly the result of drowning, lightening, hypothermia, and hyperthermia. Drowning occurs when someone dies in water. Drowning can occur in any body of water including even a small amount of water. Drowning is a common type off environmental death but in the last decade the numbers of drowning deaths have begun to decline. Drowning is the number one cause of environmental death worldwide with an average of 3,880 people fatally drowning each year (NDPA, 2013). An additional 5,789 were treated for nonfatal drowning incidents (NDPA, 2013). Men are four times more likely to drown over women and members of minorities groups are two times more likely to drown over non minorities. The reason the number of drowning have fallen in number each year is due to preventative measures being put into place.
