Social work is designed to recognize a problem in society needing to be addressed and creating the framework in which to address the problem. Theories are designed to provide a model for social workers to identify the problem and develop an effective solution. Theory on social work has developed from many different schools of thought with two key theories being the system theory and the psychodynamic theories. Systems Theory The focus on the systems theory is on how people interact with their environment. When the system theory first emerged in the 1970's the goal was to create a single model of practice in order to guide social work. During this time social work was in its infancy.
