The legislation is designed to give all federal agencies additional authority and power when it comes to intercepting communications involving potential terrorist suspects. The legislation was created in order to close American borders to terrorist threats and detain any suspects. The Patriot Act established the criminal penalties for committing acts of terrorism and crimes used to fund terrorist act. The act defines the procedures that will be used by law enforcement when obtaining evidence and outlines the additional authority they have been granted. This includes the ability to conduct wireless investigations, such as roving wiretaps and data mining. While the sole goal of the Patriot Act is to improve the security of the nation it has its challenges. The Patriot Act is unconstitutional in that is violates the fourth amendment right of the citizen despite the facts it is designed to safeguard the nation.
