The power of discretion is essential for the criminal justice professional to do their jobs but some believe this authority should be reigned in or eliminated all together. Police use discretion in order to identify criminal suspect in society and for many other reasons while prosecutors have the discretion to offer deals or to charge or not charge a criminal suspect. Judges have discretion in sentencing and settling disputes during the court process. Discretion is defined as the freedom to decide. Police officer has the freedom to decide what citizens in society will face their scrutiny and will use their good judgment to determine if criminal behavior is occurring. Police officers must follow the law but they must also apply discretion to situations they encounter in the field to ensure their safety, the safety of the public, and the safety of the suspect.
