Is the USA PATRIOT Act an effective deterrent to terrorism? Why, why not? What are your suggestions for combating terrorism? The USA Patriot Act is an important piece of legislation in combatting terrorism. Because of this legislation Homeland Security has been established and more effective measures for keeping America and her people safe have been developed. The act has increased the investigatory powers of law enforcement concerning terrorism which involve wiretaps and sneak and peek searches. The Patriot Act allows the government to use techniques and tools against terrorists we use against crime, use harsher punishment against terrorists and their allies and grants the government powers to better connect the dots (Carafano, 2004). While the focus of this act is more on the security of the nation and less on the right of the individual it is an important piece of legislation to ensure the security of the nation and its people. While this country was created to ensure the freedoms of the individual the USA Patriot Act has changed that focus when it comes to terrorism. In order for America to effectively combat terror there needs to be legislation such as the USA Patriot Act to ensure that any potential terrorist attack is stopped and the individuals planning the terror are punished for their terroristic actions. Carafano, A. (2004). A Patriotic Day: 9/11 Commission Recognizes Importance of the Patriot Act. Retrieved July 8, 2011 from http://www.heritage.org/research/re
