Personality and Criminal Behavior Psychological theories look at failures in human development to explain why crime occurs. Freud believed development happened through the childhood and what is experienced by the criminal in childhood will influence their deviant behavior as adults. Erikson found human development occurs throughout the entire lifetime and influences the type of personality that develops. In other words based on both Freud's and Erikson's psychological theories when a person fails to overcome a conflict at a stage in development it will directly impact personality development.
