According to the Washington crime map the Southwest part of Washington D.C. experiences a high number of thefts, burglaries, carjacking, and robberies. There is a similar problem in Washington Heights and the Highlands. In Bangor and Lincoln Park assaults and shooting are not uncommon but the most crime occurs around the Downtown area. Property crimes are far more common in Washington, D.C. but violent crimes are a persistent problem. The most dangerous area in the District of Columbia is Capitol Hill. In Washington rapes and murders have dropped in the last ten years. In 2001 there were 232 murders and 273 rapes but ten years later in 2011 there were 108 murders and 172 rapes (MPD, 2012). Assaults dropped almost in half in the past decade. While violent crimes have dropped property crimes have not. For example in 2001 there were 21,673 thefts and in 2011 there were 20,124 thefts (MPD, 2012). The drop in thefts is less than one percent. Auto thefts have dropped by five percent in the last decade. Currently in Washington the murder rate continues to drop but reports from local police departments are reporting an increase in violent crime.
