Crime is a deviant act that occurs for many different reasons resulting in many different theories emerging in criminology to explain the existence of crime. Two off these theories are the Social Control Theory and the Conflict theory. The Self Control theory finds crime is the result of a failure to conform to the rules of society and does not try to explain crime but why people obey the law established in society. The Conflict Theory finds social and economic inequalities cause crime. Social Control Theory The Social Control Theory originated in the 1960's when Travis Hirschi found people choose not to commit crimes due to their ties to society. Hirschi's social control theory asserts that ties to family, school and other aspects of society serve to diminish one's propensity for deviant behavior (Akers, 2004). When the citizen has no ties to society they have no reason to obey the laws and will commit crimes. When a person's social bonds are weakened by the environment in which they live their propensity for crime increases. Social bonds are established when people form attachments to society. Once a child forms an attachment with key people in their environment they will become committed to being a productiv
