The smugglers comforted the group by saying the walk would be a couple of hours long and then the small group of illegals would reach a highway, in the meantime the smugglers were going to retrieve some water for the group. The smugglers never returned with the water and the group had no way to tell where they were at or where they were headed. Only the hope and promise of gaining access in to the United States to work and support their families back in Mexico added fuel to their journey. Walking through the blistering heat reaching an unbearable temperature of 115 degrees without water or any other supplies to survive started to take its toll on the group of immigrants. Out of 26 men and teen-aged boys only 12 survived to tell their story, filled with despair and horror. They were the fortunate ones; they survived the grueling trudge through the Arizona desert in the hopes of starting a new life in a new country only ending in their capture.
