Philosophical Approaches Matrix CritiqueIn applying the various philosophical approaches to decision making, the following definitions represent my understanding of three of these approaches: consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics.1. Consequentialism: "An act is morally right depends only on the consequences of that at or something related to the act, such as motive behind the act or general rule requiring acts of the same kind (Sinnott-Armstrong, 2008)."2. Deontology: conforming to a moral norm or obligation (Alexander & Moore, 2008). Distinguishing characteristics in Deontology involve weighing whether a person has actually directly caused an event to occur, versus allowing, omitting or enabling something to occur.3. Virtue ethics: "emphasize virtues or moral character instead of duties or rules (deontology) or consequences of actions (consequentialism) (Hursthouse, 2009)." The following analysis critiques each of the courses of action I selected for each scenario, and evaluates it to determine whether the reasoning makes sense through the lens of the philosophical approach, whether or not it is really the most ethical choice, and explanations as to the reasons it may or may not be the best choice, and what the better choice would be. In addition, an explanation is provided as to the reasons to believe that alternatives, if any, are more ethical.
