Nebraska was one of the first states to pass a constitutional amendment declaring English the official language. This movement actually started because anti-German sentiments. Other states soon followed suit. By 1923, thirty four of the states had passed similar laws. The English and English-only movement started to lose some of its momentum by the end of the1980's. Many of the bills in congress have not made it past committee hearings.
