The lithosphere of the Earth is a layer that is about 100 kilometers thick and iscomposed of the crust and the upper part of the earths mantle layers. Instead of being acontinuous shell, the lithosphere is separated into many plates that fit together rather likea jigsaw puzzle except that the pieces are in constant motion. Most of the planetsearthquake and volcano activity is located along the plate boundaries. The plates can interact with each other in one of three different ways. At the typeof margin that is described as a divergent plate boundary the plates are diverging ormoving away from each other. The motion of the plates away from each other with therising of new plate material along the plate boundary can be likened to a conveyor belt. The newest plate material is located at the plate boundary and the oldest plate material islocated furthest away from the plate boundary (Fowler, 1990).Because the surface area of the earth does not change, if plate material is createdin one place (divergent plate boundaries), then it must be destroyed somewhere else. This happens along convergent plate boundaries. At convergent boundaries, two placescollide and one plate sl
