High tech crime or cybercrime is a crime committed by a criminal offender using a computer and new communication systems. The cybercrime can involve the computer system being the target and the criminal offender attacking it through malicious software and viral attacks or the computer can be used as a tool for the criminal offender to commit their crime or to store evidence of a crime. In this new class that will be offered students will learn about the characteristics of high tech crime and the current technologies being used by law enforcement and the criminal justice system to fight cybercrime. The course will in addition provide students with an explanation of the technological, cultural, and political influences which are advancing the growth of high-tech crime and the future challenges that will be faced by law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
