Link between Poverty and Mental illness Over the years of research in health care, there have been found a lot of similarity between mental illness and poverty. Research shows that common mental problems are twice as high in the poor population as compared to the rich one. Also, people facing hunger or debts, are still more likely to face hunger. Poor people have inadequate resources necessary for education, employment and access to quality health care. Hence, such people having such problems are always stressed and can easily develop mental illness.

The consequences of mental disorders is that people do not get employment. They are mostly not mentally fit to be entrusted with any task and hence get discriminated. Others who are employed, lose their existing jobs. Failure to have a stable income people are unable to cover for their medical care. If in any case they do, then they receive inappropriate health care where they spend a lot of money. As a result, not only do they fail to get better, but they are left broke and still mentally ill.
