Lauren ZamoraHawthorne DiscretionaryBoth Nathaniel Hawthorne and Catherine Beecher define a women's role to be traditional and in the home. Hawthorne shows the idea that a woman identifies herself by the job and part that she has in building and keeping a home. He shows that a woman's duties are important in identifying their character and sense of self. Through the characters of Hepizbah and Phoebe, Hawthorne is able to achieve this. Catherine Beecher also elaborates on this idea by stating her perception of the rules of women-hood. She indicates also that women are responsible for the civility and livable conditions of a household. In The House of Seven Gables, Hawthorne intends to define women using the home. He creates the role and purpose of the women in this narrative by circumstances surrounding the house. Hawthorne writes,"If a fixed idea be madness, she was perhaps not remote from it. Fast and far as they had rattled and clattered along the iron track, they might just as well, as regarded Hepzibah's mental images, have been passing up and down Pyncheon Street. With miles and miles of varied scenery ?this one old house was everywhere" (Hawthorne, 2006) . Hawthorne
