Amazon is one of the leading online retailers today. In recent years, it has been observed that the organization has been expanding in to other services. As a result, there has been much discussion on whether the company is moving away from its core competency. This paper will discuss the expansion of the organization and the effects of its move. It is indeed undeniable that the organization is no longer solely focusing on online retailing. Instead, it has moved in new areas such as adopting the Hardware as a Service (HaaS) strategy. This is demonstrated by how has introduced S3 (Simple Storage Service) and EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud). Like its core competency, this new area of service has been reported to generate an impressive level of revenue for the organization. For example, Amazon has sold the services to organizations such as and Powerset which relies on the services for processing capacity and storage (Amazon : From Book Seller to Service Provider, 2009). However, the main focus of the organization is still on online retailing and thus we cannot say that the company is moving away from it. This is justified and supported by statistics which shows that the company remains the leading online retailer in the world. In addition, it has experienced an increase in sales and growth from online retailing as well. For example, it has been reported that profit rose over 9% and sales surged 18% in January 2009 (FOWLER, 2009).Amazon also
