IntroductionBefore policing took on a formal role in the United States they were just a group of volunteers that kept night watch on the cities and the hamlets. These watches came into existence between 1636 and 1700. These watches were not effective as devices for crime control as most of the volunteer s either slept on duty or got drunk publicly during the watch. Philadelphia was the first to create a day watch in 1833, but this was a system of profit police who were paid a fee to control cri in the area. None of them were employed as full time employees of the government. The constables in the profit policing system had several non policing duties that had to be performed as well.Inception of Police Forces in the United States It was in 1838 that the first police force under the control of the municipal government was created in Boston.
