Culture and social class has an influence in space when reading Judith Cofers short story, Silent Dancing. She recalls to us about her experience through this home video with her mother in the beginning paragraph. She talks about her experience as a 3-year-old with her family living in this huge tenement. She goes on talking about her house in Puerto Rico, her family, the local stores, and the culture that surrounds her apartment. Social class is one of the many factors that influence space. Cofer tells us that she lived in Puerto Rico until her brother was born in 1954. The reason why they moved to New York City is because of the economic pressures that were occurring in their growing family. And so because of this, her father joined the United States Navy. From doing this, he was assigned to duty on a ship in a Brooklyn Yard where there was this place for cement and steel because he was looking for his uncle who lived in Paterson, New Jersey. In 1955 he came back for his family to where they had moved into the huge tenement, (Cofer, 2005)The Cofers income came from the father because he was working in the Navy which is what distinguished their social class different from other Puertican families. Cofer mentions that the building she lived in was gray
