Tutor description

This course covers the history of Africa during the colonial and postcolonial periods, beginning with an overview of the nineteenth century and focusing primarily on the period from 1885 to 1994. While we will discuss North Africa to some degree, most of the readings and case studies will cover Sub-Saharan Africa. The first part of the course explores the colonial period, focusing on how Africans responded to the imposition of colonial rule. The second half of the course covers the postcolonial period, focusing on the political, social and economic challenges Africans face in the contemporary era.
